A compact yet extremely effective lighting rig, comprised exclusively of ADJ fixtures, was deployed for a hometown performance by world renowned techno DJ Stacey Pullen. Taking place on the patio outside Detroit’s iconic TV Lounge nightclub, Pullen played a mammoth ‘open to close’ DJ set with dancefloor illumination provided by ADJ Jolt Bar FXIP, Vizi Beam 12RX and Vizi Wash Z19 fixtures.
The longest running and most iconic nightclub in Detroit, TV Lounge is the spiritual home of electronic music in Motor City. Throughout the summer, the venue’s indoor space is occasionally augmented for special events by transforming its patio into an open-air dance floor with the city skyline providing an impressive backdrop. The task of carrying out this transformation from a technical perspective falls to ART Visuals, the recently formed lighting arm of well-established Detroit audio production and integration company Audio Rescue Team. ART Visuals was formed following the acquisition by Audio Rescue Team of Ryan Richards Visuals. A well-known and much-respected lighting professional in Detroit, the latter company’s eponymous owner has joined Audio Rescue Team as Lighting & Visuals Manager and was responsible for designing, programming, and operating the lighting for the Stacey Pullen show at TV Lounge.

At the heart of Ryan’s design was ADJ’s potent and versatile Jolt Bar FXIP linear LED fixture. This IP65-rated luminaire offers huge output as well as the creative potential of brilliant bright white strobe/blinder LEDs combined with multi-zone color wash LEDs in one versatile unit. It features a central strip of 112 x 5-Watt cool white SMD LEDs, surrounded on both sides by a total of 672 x 0.3W RGB color mixing SMD LEDs. This allows the same fixture to generate intense white strobing effects as well as vibrant color washes. Both types of LED are grouped into independently controllable zones (up to 16 white and 32 color), which means the unit can also be used to generate strobe chases and other ‘eye candy’ effects. With a wide 116-degree beam angle and immense light output, the Jolt Bar FX will make a big impact wherever it is used. For the Stacey Pullen show, Ryan deployed four fixtures on a front truss, to illuminate the crowd, and an additional two units behind the DJ position to provide back light.
“I love the Jolts, they’re just so bright!” enthuses Ryan. “I use them all the time. You can't beat the bang for the buck they deliver. With the strobe in the center and RGB on the outside you can do so much with them. You can use them for a strobe effect. You can use them for a color wash. You can use them for eye candy pixel effects. They're literally one of my favorite fixtures on the market today.”
To create aerial effects for the event, Ryan utilized 10 of ADJ’s Vizi Beam 12RX dedicated beam luminaires. Despite having been recently superseded by the Vizi Beam CMY – a similar fixture but with the added advantage of CMY color mixing – the Vizi Beam 12RX continues to serve reliably the many venues and production houses, such as ART Visuals, that chose to invest in it. Harnessing the power of a 260W Philips® Platinum 12R LL MSD Discharge Lamp, the fixture’s innovative reflector design and precision-engineered optics deliver an extremely high-intensity beam with a tight 2-degree beam angle. Equipped with a range of beam-shaping tools, including two rotating prisms, it is capable of generating a variety of engaging effects.

“In Detroit, you can tell it’s a Ryan Richards show if there are a lot of Vizi Beam 12RXs, as loads of beams are kinda my thing and the 12RX is my go-to”, comments Ryan. “The output is crazy bright; they really punch through any background wash and create really crisp aerial effects. You could see the beams from the TV Lounge patio for miles around and we were hitting all the buildings that surrounded the venue with GOBOs. They are great tools that offer a good feature set paired with that fantastic output. I really don’t have a bad word to say about them.”
Completing the lighting rig for the event were four Vizi Wash Z19 automated wash-zoom fixtures. This is another product that has recently been discontinued and replaced with an updated model: the Vizi Pix Z19 which offers additional background LEDs and an external LED ring. Nevertheless, the Vizi Wash Z19 is a vibrant fixture which continues to serve its owners reliably. For the Stacey Pullen show at TV Lounge, Ryan used the fixtures to generate tight columns of light as well as wider swathes of color.

Together, the combination of ADJ’s Jolt Bar FXIP, Vizi Beam 12RX, and Vizi Wash Z19 fixtures delivered a powerful, dynamic, and visually captivating lighting experience that perfectly complemented Stacey Pullen’s marathon techno set. Ryan’s creative use of each unit’s unique capabilities transformed the TV Lounge patio into a vibrant open-air club environment, blending color, movement, and intensity to match the energy of the music. Demonstrating both the reliability and versatility of ADJ’s professional lighting solutions, the event once again highlighted how the right tools in the hands of an experienced designer can produce an unforgettable visual spectacle that will elevate any performance.
