November 2016

With the festive season upon us, I thought I’d use this month’s Tom’s Talking to suggest a few gift ideas for surprising the DJ in your life. These are fun presents that are also practical and sure to get plenty of use in 2017 and beyond! Of course, if YOU are the DJ in your life why not forward this on to a loved one to drop a subtle hint as to what you’d like to find in your stocking?

1. Headphones

An essential tool, headphones get a lot of wear and tear, which means that many DJs find themselves playing out with a battered pair. Why not help the DJ in your life keep their mixing tight while also looking slick with a brand new set of professional headphones; a good pair can be incredibly affordable these days. You can also make your gift personal, picking a style and color that fits with the DJ’s personality. American Audio’s HP 550 model, for example, offers high quality sound, a robust build and compact folding design, as well as a choice of color schemes ranging from sleek to outrageous! 2. Controller Bag

A MIDI controller sits at the heart of most modern DJs’ setup, which means it needs to be kept safe between gigs. American Audio’s VMS Bag is perfect for transporting and protecting a MIDI controller, and it’s also very affordable, making it an ideal DJ stocking-stuffer. The protective soft bag fits most leading brand-named controllers – including American Audio’s new VMS 4.1 – and includes separate pockets for a laptop (up to 17”) as well as cables and adaptors. Featuring an adjustable padded shoulder strap, as well as extra pads inside to protect the controller, the VMS Bag is a useful and stylish DJ accessory. 3. Wireless Mic

Making announcements and interacting with a crowd is essential for modern mobile DJs. Why not give the gift of ‘freedom’ this Christmas, allowing the DJ in your life to break away from their booth and interact more closely with their audience. The American Audio WM-16HH, for example, is a professional and relatively inexpensive option. With a unidirectional electric condenser microphone head and 16 selectable UHF frequencies, this system is ideal for DJs offering great audio quality and reliable wireless transmission. It offers both balanced XLR and unbalanced ¼” jack outputs, twin antennas with diversity switching (automatically selecting the one that is receiving the strongest signal at any given time) and a wireless range of up to 150ft. – perfect for commanding the attention of a crowd from anywhere in a room! 4. Speaker Stand Package

An essential – but often neglected – part of any mobile DJ’s setup, speaker stands literally hold up a sound system. Despite featuring high quality PA and amazing lightshows, the appearance of many rigs is let down by shabby speaker stands with chipped paint and dented metal. A set of new stands is an affordable, practical gift that can make a real difference to a DJ’s show. And, if you choose the new SPSX2B twin pack of ACCU STAND universal speaker tripods, you’ll also get a carry bag that will help to protect them in transit. 5. Battery-powered Speaker

Making amplified music and announcements possible absolutely anywhere, the use of battery-powered speakers is the new trend sweeping the DJ industry. Whether it’s playing music for a cocktail hour outside, or making sure announcements are heard in another part of a venue, the potential uses are unlimited. You may also be surprised to find out how affordable this technology is; in fact you’ll pay the same for the new American Audio ELS GO 8BT as a regular powered speaker would have set you back just a few years ago. Featuring Bluetooth connectivity, a built-in mixer and impressive sound quality, this new addition to the American Audio range is the perfect wireless audio solution. The ELS GO 8BT is also an ideal present for a DJ, as it’s sure to come in useful when they’re ‘off duty’ for backyard BBQs, beach parties or family picnics in the park!
